TOPIC: Menu Items marked Special
#554
Menu Items marked Special 3 Years, 9 Months ago Karma: 0
I have some menu items designated as "Special" meaning of course they are only supposed to display when the user is "Author" or higher.

When the visitor is not logged in, these items do not display (properly)!

However, when a registered visitor logs in those items are displayed and when clicked open a 404 error page.

When the visitor logs in and they are "Author" or higher, the links work properly.

How can I fix this?

Post edited by: bas123, at: 2008/08/11 05:28

Hi,

If you can supply us with the debug listing for both types of login it would be much appreciated, and with an example menu item name (i.e My Blog) that has the problem.

You can enable the debug display by adding the following to the url: sdbDebug=1

For example if your using SEO then add ?sdbDebug=1, or Joomla standard url then add it to the end like: &sdbDebug=1

Hopefully we will work out a fix..

Many Thanks

This is a site I am developing but will be turning over to an inexperienced owner (and possible contributors) I kept much of the Joomla Sample Content to give them some answers about the CMS etc.

I have since moved the "Special" Menu items to a menu of their own...

However, for demonstration, I moved one "Joomla! License" back to the main menu as a sub-menu item of "About Us".

I will provide three (Debugs) in an attachment text file.

Again,
1) No login displays correctly
2) Login as Registered displays Special Menu Items which are redirected to 404 page
3) Login as Admin displays correctly and links work (articles marked "Special"

Applicable Main Menu Structure:
About Us (Public Articles » Article 27)
|_ Privacy Policy (Public Articles » Article 59)
|_ Terms of Service (Public Articles » Article 85)
|_ Joomla! License (Special Articles » Article 2)

BTW, since I changed it and think the setting is possibly incorrect because I have to wave the cursor around some links to get them to expand AND they seem to collapse to quickly, Q: What is the recommended setting for Time and Menu Delays?

Thanks

Hi,

Sorry for the delay, our site was hacked and they deleted all files - very annoying....

Are your menu items marked as special? or public? - if special then the menu is displaying what it should, if public then it is displaying the menu correctly. From your debug files the menu link is correct in the 404 instance, the only thing here I'd say is Joomla is the blocking access as it is an unauthorised page to access. I need to fully check the permissions on the menu display, but if the later is the case, then adding a feature for an alternate url for pages where access is not allowed for a buy/register for greater access etc will overcome this issue.

As to the menu, there seems to be a bug in the delay of menu opening, you may find that reducing the time out option helps remove what you are seeing...

Many Thanks

The menu items point to content that is marked "special".

The menu items that open to these items themselves are also marked special.

These menu links in the normal Joomla Menu structure ONLY appeared before when the logged in user had Author or higher ststus. (Properly)

With the SBD Accordian Menu replacing the JMenu this anomaly occurs.

From your debug files the menu link is correct in the 404 instance, the only thing here I'd say is Joomla is the blocking access as it is an unauthorised page to access

Of course Joomla is blocking access, the menu item (which shouldn't be appearing because it's marked "Special") is linked to a file which also is marked "Special".

then adding a feature for an alternate url for pages where access is not allowed for a buy/register for greater access etc will overcome this issue -- I'm sorry, I have no idea what that means:blush:

Sorry you got "Hacked" is there anything you could share that might help others to prevent this from happening? Are you aware of the recent Joomla Security issue and it's patch?

Post edited by: bas123, at: 2008/08/16 16:39

Hi,

Thanks for your reply, it looks like you've uncovered an issue in the menu regarding the menu items and there permissions. As this is a higher priority issue I'll look at fixing it over the weekend and hope to have a fix soon - though my test site was deleted too!

What I meant by an alternative url, is that when the menu encounters a menu item that the user has no access to that it keeps the menu item name, but instead of the original link, it replaces the link to one of your choice, such as site registration or sales page - hope this is a better explanation.

As to the hack it is most annoying, and looks like they executed various external scripts through the forum pages from our log files. I am aware of the security issue, but unfortunately this site is running Joomla 1.0 and was currently in the process of migrating it over to Joomla 1.5 (as well as upgrading to the latest forums/docman etc) before the hack, but of course the new site was deleted too - so now a little behind the planned switch over.

Many Thanks
